AROUND THE STAND
First the Florida Panthers will raise their second straight Stanley Cup banner on October 7, opening the season against the Chicago Blackhawks. They’re chasing a historic three-peat, something not seen since the Islanders’ dynasty days in the ’80s. The league, meanwhile, is wrapping its final 82-game season before shifting to a longer schedule and bringing NHL stars back to the Olympics. Bigger calendar, bigger stakes.
Meanwhile Caitlin Clark is gearing up for her first 3-point contest at WNBA All-Star Weekend and she’s doing it on home court. She’ll face off against sharpshooter Sabrina Ionescu and reigning champ Allisha Gray in what’s shaping up to be a star-studded shootout. The prize pool’s growing, the buzz is loud, and the league knows exactly what it’s doing: spotlighting the next generation and riding the Clark effect all the way.
In Hollywood headlines Nicolas Cage made a rare public appearance with his wife Riko Shibata just as Sarah Jessica Parker confirmed she once dated the actor during their Honeymoon in Vegas days. Cage’s response? He blames his blue leather jacket and a bout of sinusitis for failing Parker’s “mom test.” A perfectly weird Nicolas Cage reason and somehow, totally believable.
Over in the sports-media arena Shaquille O’Neal had some choice words for Robert Griffin III after the former NFL quarterback reposted a racist meme involving Angel Reese. Shaq’s warning was simple: say her name again and you’ll be dealing with more than just tweets. He also took a jab at RGIII’s relevance, saying all he’ll be remembered for is his podcast. Message delivered, Diesel style.
And finally Lottie Woad is leaving the amateur ranks behind. The 21-year-old nearly stole the show at the Amundi Evian Championship and will make her pro debut at the Women’s Scottish Open. With her LPGA card secured and buzz building, Woad isn’t just turning pro—she’s arriving with momentum.
