First, the Phillies pulled off a win without even swinging. A rare catcher’s interference call with the bases loaded handed them a walk-off 3 to 2 victory over the Red Sox in extra innings. It was the first time since 1971 that a game ended this way. No hits required. Just a bat, a glove, and a well-timed review.
Meanwhile, at elevation in Tahoe, Ryan Gerard finally had his breakthrough moment. The 25-year-old battled five bogeys and strung together two birdie-eagle bursts to win the Barracuda Championship, his first PGA Tour title and the tour’s 999th winner overall. The format was Stableford, golf’s version of controlled chaos. Gerard came out on top with 47 points and a full heart.
Across the pond, tragedy struck the extended royal family. Rosie Roche, a 20-year-old cousin of Princes William and Harry, was found dead in her home in North Yorkshire. A firearm was recovered at the scene, and authorities ruled out foul play. The family is grieving privately, while the headlines remain heartbreakingly public.
Back in the States, Zak Williams marked what would have been his father Robin Williams’ 74th birthday with a tribute that cut deep. “Grief isn’t linear,” he wrote on Instagram, alongside a throwback of the late comedian. His message was clear: legacy outlives fame, and kindness, not celebrity, is what endures.
And finally, Venus Williams is back in the game. The seven-time Grand Slam champ is making a surprise return at the DC Open after more than a year off, and says she’s still swinging big. One thing missing is sister Serena. Venus says it’s not quite the same without her longtime partner in crime. But for now, she’s playing for the love of the game, and possibly something more.
